DEPARTMENT FOR CULTURE, MEDIA AND SPORT (DCMS) MAY CONTROL TELECOM AND BROADBAND POLICY

There has been a lot of noise going on currently as to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) taking over the regulation and responsibility of telecom and broadband issues. For once many politicians as well as officials have lashed out against the proposal and strongly spoken against it. The government after making clear of its intentions has certainly received a lot of negative vibes coming in from the people. The government for once is looking at shifting the digital economy remit into the DCMS. For once many look at this as an inconvenience and much more than that to the field and growth of technology in United Kingdom. One of the Members of Parliament Chi Onwurah from Newcastle Central is quite surprised at the turn of events. He spoke of how while in the DCMS questions which revolved around sports and libraries, now comes talks of broadband and telecom also being added to it.

Onwurah shows her concern now and rightly so for she does know a thing or two about this. The woman was herself a former Ofcom head of telecoms technology. She stated of how the DCMS doesn’t have the required knowledge and understanding to deal with the broadband and telecom section. For once, adding a person or two who knows about the working of these divisions isn’t enough either.Even the ISP Association agreed with similar thoughts as that of MP Onwurah. A spokesperson from ISPA spoke of how the DCMS is more into the music industry and wouldn’t be appropriate to let it control something as different and as crucial as the broadband deals and telecom sector regulations. In the mean while it is the Department for Business Innovation and Skills that looks after the workings of the digital economy.
